History of Brussels Airport
Brussels National Airport was created by the German army in the Meersbrook area during World War II. After the war, the airport was returned to Belgium. The Belgian government decided to treat the old civilian airport Haren as a small airport and Melsbroek as the new national airport. In 1940, the Germans occupied 1,500 acres of the alternate airfield. They built an airport and built 3 runways. The airport is called Fliegerhorst Melsbroek because the airport building was built in the city of Melsbroek.
During the boom of commercial aviation in the 1960s and 1970s, several hangars were built. A new cargo terminal was built in 1976. In 1994, a brand new cargo terminal was built near the old 1958 building. Two old piers were demolished and replaced by modern piers. In 2002, in the turmoil of the demise of the national airline Sabena, a new terminal opened.
According to a survey of more than 100,000 passengers worldwide, the airport was named the best airport in Europe by the International Airport Council International/International Air Transport Association (ACI/IATA) in 2005. As of 2012, Brussels Airport continues to rank among the top airports. On December 12, 2005, a direct train to Leuven and Liège was opened.
